Next Chapter for the Boulder Strong Resource Center
The Boulder Stong Resource Center (BSRC) opened mere weeks after the tragic shooting that occurred on March 22, 2021 at a King Soopers grocery store in South Boulder, which claimed the lives of 10 people and impacted countless others.
After four years of supporting our community, the Center’s doors will permanently close on April 25th, 2025. However, support for survivors and the families of those lost will continue.
Responding to our community in crisis
Immediately following the shooting, Mental Health Partners (now Clinica Family Health & Wellness) partnered with King Soopers, the City of Boulder, Boulder County, the Boulder County’s District Attorney’s Office, and the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Administrators to make supportive counseling, group services, and holistic services available to victims and survivors.
In June 2021, thanks to funding from the Antiterrorism and Emergency Assistance Program (AEAP), Colorado Healing Fund, Community Foundation of Boulder County (CFBC), Neguse Congressional funds, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), and other philanthropic donations, the Boulder Strong Resource Center was able to open its doors at a dedicated location on Baseline Road in Boulder – just a couple miles from where the tragedy occurred.
As the Center grew and evolved to meet the individual and communal needs of survivors, the dedicated staff offered a broad scope of services, including:
- AcuDetox
- Art therapy
- Case management
- Comfort dogs
- Computer labs
- Court proceeding viewings
- Group gatherings and therapy
- Individual therapy
- Human resources support for King Soopers employees
- Support at memorial events
- Resources on the Road (mobile first responder units)
- Rhythmic healing
- Therapeutic massage
- Victims’ resources
- Writing/journaling groups
Since opening, the Boulder Strong Resource Center has compassionately served over 1,000 visitors in a welcoming and trauma-informed space, as well as provided on-site support at the Table Mesa King Soopers location, which re-opened in 2022.
In the past year, BSRC staff walked alongside the community during legal proceedings which concluded in September 2024. Following this trial, it was ultimately decided by the BSRC Advisory Board (comprised of stakeholders from CFHW, Boulder City, Boulder County, Victims of Crime Act Administrators, the Antiterrorism and Emergency Assistance Program, the Boulder County District Attorney’s office, and family members of victims) that it was time to formally and finally close the Center’s doors.
The healing journey continues
Healing from trauma is a journey, and it looks different for each person. While the final verdict in the trial for the shooter brought a measure of closure and justice to many, we know that healing continues for some members of our community – and will for many years to come.
To support these folks and our community, the Center is transitioning clients who may benefit from continued support to a different model of care - including:
- Mental health care. Clients and community members who currently receive mental health support can continue to receive therapy through Clinica Family Health & Wellness.
- Remembrance Day support. In partnership with the City of Boulder and the Boulder County District Attorney’s office, Clinica will continue to provide support on Remembrance Days and other important events.
- Legal proceedings support. If and when new court dates arise surrounding the case against the shooter, Clinica will be available to offer support.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff, funders, and community partners who made BSRC possible. Thanks to their compassionate and excellent care, we were able to provide invaluable support to South Boulder and beyond during an incredibly painful time. And though the Center’s doors will close on April 25, Clinica Family Health & Wellness will continue to operate its mission as a resource of hope and healing for community.
We will always be #BoulderStrong.
